Come see how Texas A & M University Baylor College of Dentistry (BCD) is providing faculty dentist, four fourth year dental students, and two dental assistants five days per week at North Dallas Shared Ministries (NDSM). BCD proposes to provide dental services to a total of 3,000 patients at its new clinic locations in DY 4. In addition, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School (UTSW) provides a community outreach worker, a physician assistant, a registered nurse, and a half-time medical director. Medical student, family medicine resident, and physician assistant student rotations have also been initiated. Baylor College of Dentistry and UTSW are able to provide these services at NDSM as a result of DSRIP funding.
This project is creating a multidisciplinary team that is integrating dental and medical services in a patient centered health home at NDSM to treat the health needs of the patient in a comprehensive and team oriented approach. Collaborative practice across disciplines, mechanisms to improve care coordination, and system level initiatives to improve the quality of care provided will be included in this coming year. These partnerships will provide training experiences to develop and test community level interventions to improve oral health for a vulnerable and underserved population which can be replicated in other communities.
North Dallas Shared Ministries was established in 1983 to address the overwhelming requests in northwest Dallas for emergency assistance for food, clothing, and housing coming to individual congregations in the area. NDSM was originally established to provide short-term, emergency assistance for food, payment of rent and utility bills, and clothing.
